Santorum 34%, Romney 24%
For the first time, Rick Santorum tops our national GOP presidential candidate horse race poll.
Santorum gained 14% in our polling over the past six days as Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich saw their support plunge.
Our Feb. 12 national poll of Republican voters shows Santorum at 34% (+14% since Feb. 6), Romney at 24% (-11%), Gingrich at 14% (-8%), and Ron Paul at 13% (+4). Fifteen percent expressed no opinion.
Romney and Gingrich poll worst among young voters (18-29 year olds). In our polling of registered voters who say they’ll vote in their Republican primary or caucus, none supported Gingrich, and only 12% supported Romney, while 41% said they’d vote for Santorum and 38% said they’d vote for Paul.
In our Feb. 12 national scientific telephone survey, we questioned 582 registered voters who said they’d vote in their state’s Republican primary or caucus. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 4%.
