Who is Cuba’s leader?

The American people scored well in a geo-political question. In a Poll Position national scientific telephone survey we asked, who is the current leader of Cuba, Fidel or Raul Castro? A good majority of Americans, 66% correctly answered Raul Castro, 17% thought Fidel Castro was still in Charge, 17% did not know or did not have an opinion.

Raul Castro was elected President by Cuba’s National Assembly in February of 2008. He took over from his ailing brother Fidel who said he would not stand for President again following a two year illness. Fidel Castro ruled Cuba from 1959 until he stepped down due to illness in 2006.

Younger Americans, those in the 18-29 year old age group, were least certain in their choice with 57% saying Raul Castro was the current leader, 33% thought Fidel was still in charge, 10% did not know or did not offer an opinion.

Hispanics thought Fidel Castro was the current leader with 48% choosing the older Castro brother, 47% thought Raul was the current leader, 6% did not offer an opinion.

Independents faired best along political lines with 73% correctly saying Raul Castro is the current leader of Cuba, among Democrats 64% picked Raul, and 62% of Republicans selected Raul Castro as the current leader of

Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,232 registered voters nationwide was conducted February 06, 2012 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.
