Better to buy or rent your home?
Almost 80% of Americans think it is better to buy a house than rent one. In a Poll Position national scientific telephone survey we asked, do you think it makes more financial sense to rent a house or buy a house to live in? A large majority, 79%, said it makes more sense to buy a home, 12% opted for renting a home, 9% did not have an opinion.
Men and women had similar views on the question with 81% of men saying it made more sense to buy, 12% said renting made more financial sense, 7% did not offer an opinion. Among women, 76% said buying made more financial sense, 13% said renting a home was better, 11% had no opinion.
Renting a home was favored most by those in the 18-29 year old age group with 21% saying renting made more financial sense, 70% said buying a house to live in was better, 10% did not offer an opinion.
Along political lines, 83% of Republicans said buying a home makes more financial sense, 80% of Democrats agreed. However, among Independents, 72% thought buying a home made more financial sense, 16% said renting was smarter, 13% of Independents did not have an opinion.
Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,186 registered voters nationwide was conducted January 29, 2012 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.
