President Gingrich?
By a small margin, Americans say they would not be comfortable with Newt Gingrich being President of the United States. In a Poll Position national scientific telephone survey, 46% of those asked said they would not be comfortable with the GOP candidate being president, 39% would be comfortable if Gingrich was the leader of our country, 16% did not have an opinion either way.
Gingrich has a problem with women in the survey with half, 50% saying they would not be comfortable with him being president, however 36% said they would be, 14% had no opinion to offer. Among men, Gingrich fared better with 42% of men saying they would be comfortable with him as President of the United States, 41% would not be comfortable, 17% did not offer an opinion.
A majority of African-Americans had a problem with Gingrich being president, 62% said they would not be comfortable with it, 26% said they would be comfortable with a President Gingrich, 12% had no opinion. Whites were split almost down the middle on the Gingrich question with 43% saying they would not be comfortable with Gingrich being president, 41% would be comfortable, 16% of whites did not offer an opinion on the question.
Among Independents, 49% would not be comfortable with Gingrich being the U.S. President, 34% would be comfortable, 17% did not offer an opinion. Views on the question were not surprising among Republicans and Democrats with 72% of Republicans saying they would be comfortable with Gingrich as president, 8% would not be comfortable, 20% of Republicans did not have an opinion on the Gingrich question. Democrats countered with 85% saying they would not be comfortable with Gingrich as president, 6% said they would be comfortable, 10% of Democrats did not offer an opinion.
Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,113 registered voters nationwide was conducted January 24, 2012 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.
