Do teachers make enough?
A majority of Americans think U.S. school teachers do not make enough money. In a Poll Position national scientific telephone survey we asked, do you think school teachers in the U.S. are underpaid, overpaid, or make the right amount of money? More than half of Americans, 56% said teachers are underpaid, 24% think U.S. teachers make the right amount of money, 13% said teachers are overpaid, 8% did not have an opinion on the question.
Republicans and Democrats differed over the teachers pay. Among Republicans, 45% said teachers are underpaid, 19% said they are overpaid, 30% said teachers make the right amount of money. Democrats countered with 67% saying teachers are underpaid, only 4% said U.S. teachers are overpaid, 19% said teachers make the right amount of money. Independents weighed in with 57% saying teachers are underpaid, 15% think they are overpaid, 21% said U.S. teachers make the right amount of money.
Young Americans, those in the 18-29 year old age group felt strongest about teacher pay with 69% saying U.S. teachers are underpaid, 8% said they are overpaid, 19% said teachers make the right amount of money.
Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,142 registered voters nationwide was conducted December 06, 2011 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.
