OK with teenage girls buying morning-after pills?
While a majority of Americans do not think teenage girls should be able to buy morning-after birth control pills off a drug store shelf, more than a third think it is OK. In a Poll Position national scientific telephone survey, 51% of respondents said teenage girls should not be able to buy morning-after pills off a drug store shelf, 37% said it is OK, while 12% did not have an opinion or were undecided on the issue.
Young people, in the 18-29 year old category, were most in favor with 65% saying teenage girls should be able to buy morning-after birth control pills off the drug store shelf, 23% did not approve, 13% had no opinion.
Republicans were most against the idea with 68% saying teenage girls should not be able to purchase morning-after birth control pills off a drug store shelf, 26% thought it was OK, and 6% offered no opinion.
Women were more opposed to the idea than men with 55% of women saying no to teenage girls buying the pills off a drug store shelf, 34% of women said it was OK with them, 11% had no opinion. Among men, 47% were against teenage girls buying the morning-after pill off the shelf, 34% of men said it was OK with them, 15% did not have an opinion.
Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,356 registered voters nationwide was conducted December 11, 2011 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.
