Problem with “Tebowing”?
A majority of Americans do not have any issues with Denver Bronco quarterback Tim Tebow expressing his religious faith on the football field. In a Poll Position national scientific telephone survey, 66% said they did not have a problem with it, 13% did, 21% did not have an opinion. Among football fans, 72% said they did not have any issues with Tebow expressing his faith on the field, 17% did have an issue with it, 11% had no opinion.
The Bronco QB has become the talk of the league, going 7-1 in his last eight starts and putting the team into a position to make the playoffs. Tebow kneels in prayer at times during and after games. His reflective position has been called “Tebowing” by fans and commentators.
Young people, those in the 18-29 year old age group were most evenly divided on the Tebow question with 54% not having an issue with him showing his faith on the field, 39% did have a problem, 8% did not have an opinion.
Republicans were most supportive of Tebow with 84% having no issues with him showing his faith, 12% do have an issue with it, 4% had no opinion. Democrats were somewhat divided on the issue, 56% had no issue with Tebow showing his faith, 27% did have an issue, 17% offered no opinion. Independents were supportive with 77% having no issue, 13% did, 11% had no opinion on Tebow showing his faith.
Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,098 registered voters nationwide was conducted December 13, 2011 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.
