Should Boeheim be fired?
Syracuse University basketball coach has come under fire for disparaging remarks he made about two young men who claimed they were sexually abused by Boeheim’s longtime assistant and friend Bernie Fine. In a Poll Position national scientific telephone survey we wanted to know if you think Boeheim should be fired following his initial remarks in the sordid case. More than a third of Americans, 37% said Boeheim should be fired. However, a larger number, 39% did not know enough about the situation to make a decision, 18% said Boeheim should not be fired, and 6% did not have an opinion.
Boeheim initially accused the alleged victims of not being truthful and seeking money for their allegations. He stood by his friend Fine and said an investigation should be allowed to run its course before jumping to conclusions. However, an explicit and revealing tape surfaced which led to the dismissal of Fine from his job as a Syracuse University assistant basketball coach. Boeheim has now apologized to the alleged victim, or victims who have accused Fine of sexually assaulting them. He has also said he will now work to support child abuse agencies.
A majority of people in the 18-29 year old category, 51%, think Boeheim should be fired following his initial remarks, 30% said they did not know enough about the situation, 9% did not think Boeheim should be fired and 10% did not have an opinion.
Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,072 registered voters nationwide was conducted December 4, 2011 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.
