51%: Tougher Iran sanctions

By a 51%-28% margin, Americans believe the U.S. government should slap Iran with tougher sanctions and other non-military punitive measures.

Republicans felt most strongly about applying harsher sanctions – 64%-18%.  Democrats agreed by a 40%-32% margin, and independents favored stronger sanctions 49%-37%.

The Iranian regime has sparked heightened international concern because of its hostile attitude towards Israel and Iran’s growing nuclear program, which many suspect is meant to produce nuclear weapons despite Tehran’s denials.

Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,174 registered voters nationwide was conducted December 1, 2011 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.
