Fear terror or economy more?

An overwhelming number of Americans are more worried about the state of the U.S. economy than the possibility of another terrorist attack against our country. In a Poll Position national scientific telephone survey, 82% said the economic situation is more worrying, 8% worried more about a terrorist attack, 10% did not have an opinion.

The trend crossed gender and political lines. Men and women worried more about the economy with 82% choosing economy over terror. Among men, 10% were more worried about a terrorist attack versus 7% of women.

Of Independents, 85% worried more about the economy, only 3% picked a terrorist attack as a bigger concern, 12% had no opinion. Among Republicans, 82% selected the economy as their biggest fear, 11% worried more about a terrorist attack, 7% did not have an opinion. Democrats differed, just slightly, with 79% more worried about the economy, 11% about a terrorist attack against America, 10% had no opinion.

There was a difference between whites and African-Americans. Whites chose the economy over terror fears by 86% to 8%. African-Americans also chose the economy as their biggest fear but by a smaller number of 63% to 11% for a possible terrorist attack. Twenty-sx percent of African-Americans offered no opinion.

Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,107 registered voters nationwide was conducted November 17, 2011 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.
