54%: Approve ousting OWS

New York City authorities forcefully removed Occupy Wall Street (OWS) protesters from Zuccotti Park after a two-month takeover of the site to protest economic conditions in the U.S..

In a Poll Position national scientific telephone survey we asked if you approve or disapprove of the decision to force the protesters to temporarily leave the park and to ban tents and sleeping bags from the park henceforth. A majority of Americans, 54%, approved, 28% disapproved, and 18% did not offer an opinion.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the decision to clear the park was made for public safety reasons and to ensure all would have access to the park, not a select few. A court order supported the decision, however the order said protesters cold return to demonstrate but could not camp out in the park again.

Republicans showed strong support with 76% approving of the decision to make the protesters leave, 12% disapproving, and 13% offering no opinion. Democrats were not in favor of the decision with 40% disapproving, 31% approving, and 30% not having an opinion. Independents favored the move with 54% approving, 34% not approving, and 13% with no opinion.

Whites and African-Americans agreed with the decision to force the protesters out, but by different margins. Whites favored the move with 61% approving, 25% disapproving, and 14% with no opinion. African-Americans also showed support but with a narrower margin of 47% approving, 35% not approving, and 18% not offering an opinion.

Americans in the 30-44 year old age group were least in favor of the authorities decision with 43% disapproving, 36% approving, and 21% with no opinion.

Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,170 registered voters nationwide was conducted November 15, 2011 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.

  1. Sorry guys. The wording of this question stinks. The one-line headliner implies the question is about permanent eviction, but the question is stated so that the respondent can either be for or against:
    1.) The OWS movement itself
    2.) Police-enforced sanitation.

I have no idea what the results of this mean.
