32% know a victim of sexual assault

32% know a victim of sexual assault

Thirty-two percent of Americans say they know someone who has been a victim of criminal sexual assault. In wake of the child sex abuse scandal at Penn State, in a Poll Position national scientific telephone survey, we asked if you knew anyone who had been a victim of sexual assault. While 57% said they did not know anyone, almost a third of Americans, 32% said they do know a sexual assault victim. Eleven percent did not have an opinion.

Women, more than other group, said they know a criminal sexual assault victim with 38% answering yes, 53% said no and 9% did not have an opinion. Among men, 25% said they knew a victim, 62% did not, 13% offered no opinion.

More whites than African-Americans said they know someone who is a victim of criminal sexual assault with 33% of whites answering yes, they know someone, 58% did not, 9% had no opinion. African-Americans responded with 19% saying they know someone who was a victim of criminal sexual assault, 75% did not, 7% had no opinion.

Young people, in the 18-29 year old age group, said they know someone who has been a victim of criminal sexual assault with 36% answering yes to the question, 60% said they did not know of anyone and 4% had no opinion.

Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,200 registered voters nationwide was conducted November 13, 2011 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.
