Nuclear Divide

Americans are almost evenly divided over whether they believe Israel should take military action against Iran over Iran’s nuclear program.  A recent report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) raises concerns over Iran’s nuclear program and the possibility Iran is seeking to make a nuclear weapon. In a Poll Position national scientific telephone survey, 37% of those questioned said yes, they believe Israel will attack Iran over concerns with the nuclear program, 35% said no, they don’t believe Israel will attack Iran and 27% said they don’t know enough to say whether or not Israel should attack Iran.

Along political lines, 49% of Republicans said they believe Israel will attack Iran over it’s nuclear program, 29% said they don’t believe Israel will, while 20% did not know enough to say. Democrats countered with 29% saying they believe Israel will attack Iran, 43% did not believe an attack would happen, and 26% did not know enough to say. Independents were close to an even divide with 31% believing an attack would happen, 32% not believing one would occur and 35% saying they did not know enough to make a decision.

Men and women differed on the question with 47% of men believing Israel will attack Iran, 38% not believing an attack will happen and 14% not knowing enough to say either way. Women were less sure an attack would happen with 27% saying yes, 32% said no, they do not believe Israel will attack Iran and 39% saying they don’t know enough to say if Israel will attack Iran over the nuclear concern.

Poll Position’s scientific telephone survey of 1,184 registered voters nationwide was conducted November 10, 2011 and has a margin of error of ±3%. Poll results are weighted to be a representative sampling of all American adults.
